Does anyone know the current wardrobe price in nigeria for a standard 4-door MDF or HDF wooden design?

My clothes are currently scattered in travel bags because my new apartment does not have built-in closets. I urgently need to buy a free-standing wardrobe. I am looking for a modern 4-door design with a mirror in the middle, some hanging space, and a few drawers for shoes. What is the current wardrobe price in nigeria for units made out of High-Density Fiberboard (HDF) or Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF)? I see many vendors advertising beautiful wardrobes on Instagram, but I am worried the wood will absorb moisture and swell up during the rainy season. How much should I budget for something that will last at least five years?

For a free-standing unit, the current wardrobe price in nigeria for a standard 4-door HDF or MDF design ranges from 250,000 to 350,000 Naira. This price usually includes a central dressing mirror, three bottom drawers for shoes, and heavy-duty stainless steel hanging rods. You mentioned a very valid concern regarding moisture. MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) is highly susceptible to water damage and swelling. If you are buying from an Instagram vendor or a showroom, you must insist on Marine Board or HDF (High-Density Fiberboard). Marine board is chemically treated to resist moisture and humidity, which is crucial for the Nigerian rainy season. A 4-door wardrobe made entirely of Marine Board will cost closer to 400,000 Naira, but it will never peel, warp, or swell, even if you mop the floor with excess water.

Beyond the basic wardrobe price in nigeria, the longevity of your wardrobe depends entirely on the accessories and hardware used. The wooden panels rarely break; it is the hinges and drawer runners that fail first. Most cheap wardrobes (under 150,000 Naira) use terrible Chinese hinges. After a month of opening and closing the heavy 6-foot doors, the screws strip out of the wood, and the doors sag or fall off completely. You must explicitly tell your carpenter or vendor to use "Soft-Close" or hydraulic hinges. These hinges catch the door before it slams and close it gently, preventing the screws from tearing out of the wood. Also, ensure the bottom of the wardrobe is elevated on strong metal or plastic legs. If the wood sits directly on the tiles, it will absorb mopping water and rot from the bottom up.

I hired a carpenter to build a floor-to-ceiling 4-door wardrobe using HDF for 280,000 Naira. It looks exactly like the imported ones, but it is much stronger. Ask them to use a glossy laminate finish, it is much easier to wipe clean.

Do not buy a wardrobe without checking the depth. A standard adult hanger is about 17 inches wide. If the wardrobe is less than 20 inches deep, the sleeves of your suits and jackets will get crushed every time you close the doors. Demand a minimum depth of 22 inches.

If your budget is very tight, consider buying a mobile canvas wardrobe for about 25,000 Naira as a temporary fix. It uses metal pipes and thick fabric. It is not fancy, but it keeps your clothes organized and dust-free until you can afford a proper wooden wardrobe.
