My house plastering is finally complete and it has dried perfectly. The next stage is painting, both inside and outside. I need a smooth emulsion paint for the interior rooms and a very rugged, weather-resistant textcote paint for the exterior walls to protect the house from heavy rain and algae growth. What is the average 20-liter bucket of paint price in nigeria for premium brands like Dulux, Berger, and Meyer Paints? I have also seen many cheaper, locally mixed paints in the market. Are these cheaper alternatives safe to use, or will they start peeling and fading after just one rainy season?

The bucket of paint price in nigeria is divided strictly into premium brands and budget brands. For premium brands like Dulux, Berger, and Meyer, a 20-liter bucket of standard interior emulsion paint will cost between 35,000 and 55,000 Naira. For the exterior, you need Textcote (textured paint) because it contains small sand-like particles that cover plastering imperfections and provide a thick barrier against rain. A 20-liter bucket of premium Textcote costs between 50,000 and 80,000 Naira. These premium brands use high-quality acrylic resins and anti-fungal chemicals. They will not peel, they are washable if your kids stain the walls, and the colors will remain vibrant for at least seven to ten years without fading under the harsh Nigerian sun.

Regarding the cheaper, locally mixed alternatives and the paint price in nigeria: You will see thousands of buckets from unknown local brands selling for 10,000 to 15,000 Naira per 20 liters. To be brutally honest, using these for your exterior is a terrible financial mistake. Cheap paints are made primarily of water and cheap chalk (calcium carbonate) with very little binding resin. If you paint the outside of your house with it, the first heavy August rain will literally wash the paint off the walls, leaving ugly streaks. Within a year, algae will grow on it and turn your beautiful house green and black. However, you can strategically use the cheaper paint for the initial "primer" coat to seal the raw cement, and then apply two coats of premium Dulux or Berger on top to save money without sacrificing durability.

I used Meyer Paints for my exterior textcote. It cost a fortune (about 65k per bucket) but five years later, the house still looks like it was painted yesterday. Do not compromise on exterior paint. The weather here is too harsh.

Before you paint, ensure your painter applies a quality screeding or POP filler to the interior walls to make them perfectly smooth. Applying expensive silk or satin paint on a rough, poorly plastered wall looks absolutely terrible.

If Dulux is too expensive, look at Finecoat or President Paints. They are fantastic mid-tier Nigerian brands. A bucket of Finecoat emulsion is around 25,000 Naira and it offers very decent coverage and durability for interior rooms.
