What is camp life and the compensation package like for an engineer working at Nigeria LNG Limited – Bonny Island, Rivers State?

I am currently evaluating a job offer from an international oil company in Lagos, but I just got a call for a final interview with Nigeria LNG Limited – Bonny Island, Rivers State. I know NLNG pays incredibly well, but I am very concerned about the isolation of living on Bonny Island. How does the work rotation schedule operate for technical staff? Do they offer a two-weeks-on and two-weeks-off rotation? Also, is the residential camp comfortable enough for someone relocating with their spouse, and are there good schools within the facility for children?

Choosing to work at Nigeria LNG Limited – Bonny Island, Rivers State is a decision that requires balancing extreme financial reward with a highly isolated lifestyle. Financially, NLNG is arguably the highest-paying company in Nigeria. A mid-level engineer earns a staggering amount, paid partly in Naira and partly in foreign currency equivalents, shielding you from inflation. The camp life (the Residential Area or RA) is a literal paradise bubble. It is completely insulated from the lack of infrastructure in mainland Nigeria. The RA has 24/7 uninterrupted power, highly treated running water, a world-class golf course, massive swimming pools, fully equipped gyms, and exclusive supermarkets. It is incredibly safe and secure. However, you cannot drive out of the island easily; you rely strictly on company-scheduled boats and helicopters to return to Port Harcourt.

Regarding the rotation and family life at Nigeria LNG Limited – Bonny Island, Rivers State: The work schedule depends entirely on your specific role. Field operators and maintenance technicians usually do the 14-days-on and 14-days-off rotation. However, corporate engineers and management staff often work standard Monday to Friday hours and live permanently in the RA. If you relocate with your spouse, they might find it very boring after a few months because the island is small and there are no massive shopping malls or cinemas. Fortunately, the company provides the NLNG School for staff children, which is easily one of the best-equipped and highest-standard primary and secondary schools in West Africa. The isolation is real, but the massive salary and zero-stress living conditions make it 100 percent worth it.

I have lived on the Bonny Island RA for six years. It is the best place to raise small children in Nigeria because they can ride their bicycles outside safely at 9 PM. But teenagers usually hate it here because it is too quiet.

The food at the staff canteen is excellent and heavily subsidized. You practically spend zero Naira on feeding and transportation while on the island. You will save 90 percent of your massive salary effortlessly.

Make sure your spouse is okay with the isolation. Many marriages suffer because the wife is stuck on the island with no career opportunities while the husband works 12-hour shifts at the plant.
