What are the employee benefits and factory shift hours like at Nigerian Breweries – Lagos?

I have received an offer to join the production and quality assurance team at Nigerian Breweries – Lagos. The company is known for taking excellent care of its employees, offering free drinks, and providing a very vibrant workplace culture. However, as someone entering the production side rather than the corporate office, I am worried about the shift hours. How grueling are the night shifts, and does the company pay handsome shift allowances to compensate for the irregular hours? What is the medical coverage like for staff working directly on the factory floor?

Joining the production team at Nigerian Breweries – Lagos (Iganmu) is an excellent career move. NB Plc (part of the Heineken group) is arguably the best-paying manufacturing company in Nigeria. The employee benefits are legendary. You get comprehensive medical cover, very high basic salaries, annual leave allowances, and the famous monthly free crates of assorted drinks. However, production work is demanding. The breweries run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, meaning you will absolutely be placed on a rotating shift schedule. A common rotation is morning shift (6 AM to 2 PM), afternoon shift (2 PM to 10 PM), and night shift (10 PM to 6 AM). The night shifts are physically exhausting and require serious lifestyle adjustments.

To compensate for the grueling hours, Nigerian Breweries – Lagos pays very generous shift allowances, night duty bonuses, and overtime pay if you cover for a sick colleague. When you combine your basic salary with these factory allowances, production staff often take home significantly more money than the corporate staff sitting in air-conditioned offices. The safety culture on the factory floor is strictly governed by global Heineken standards. You are provided with top-tier personal protective equipment, and any safety violation is heavily penalized. The medical facility inside the brewery is a fully equipped mini-hospital, ensuring immediate response to any factory accidents. It is a tough environment physically, but the financial rewards and job security are absolutely fantastic.

I worked as a quality assurance chemist on the night shift for two years. It messes up your sleep cycle, but the shift allowance is so huge you will not complain. Just make sure you sleep in a dark room during the day.

The free drinks allocation is real. Every month, a massive truck delivers crates of Star, Heineken, and Maltina to your house. You will have so many drinks you end up giving them away to neighbors and family.

NB Plc is a very heavily unionized environment. The workers union is very strong and constantly negotiates salary increments with management to match inflation. You will never be owed salary, not even for one day.
