I just completed my NYSC and I passed the aptitude test for the graduate trainee program at Zenith Bank – Lagos. Zenith is widely respected as one of the most profitable and prestigious banks in Nigeria. However, older bankers constantly warn me about the extreme pressure, long working hours, and the very strict corporate dress code. Can someone explain exactly how demanding the targets are for entry-level staff? More importantly, is the legendary Zenith Bank profit-sharing bonus at the end of the year actually worth the intense stress and sleepless nights?

Welcome to the reality of Zenith Bank – Lagos. It is the most prestigious tier-one bank, but it is built on a foundation of extreme discipline and intense pressure. As an entry-level staff member, your life will revolve entirely around the bank. The official resumption time is 7:30 AM, but in reality, you must be at your desk by 7:00 AM. Closing time is officially 5 PM, but nobody leaves until the branch manager leaves, which is often past 8 PM. The dress code is legendary; men must wear crisp dark suits, white or light blue shirts, and conservative ties. Women must wear immaculate corporate attire with minimal makeup. You must look like a million dollars every single day. The marketing targets are aggressive. Even if you are in customer service, you will be given a target to bring in deposits.

However, the justification for this intense pressure is the legendary Zenith Bank compensation package. Their basic salary for entry-level staff is among the highest in the banking industry. But the real magic happens in December. The Zenith profit-sharing bonus is entirely real. If the bank hits its massive annual profit targets (which it almost always does), confirmed staff receive a bulk bonus payment that can amount to 100 percent or even 150 percent of their total annual basic salary. It is life-changing money that allows bankers to buy lands and cars outright. If you can survive the extreme stress, the shouting from branch managers, and the long hours for three years, you will emerge incredibly wealthy and highly disciplined. It is a brilliant place for a young, energetic person to start their career.

I spent five years at Zenith. It is a military boot camp for bankers. The pressure is suffocating, but when that December bonus drops, you forget all your suffering and start smiling. It is the best place to build capital early in life.

Do not join Zenith if you want a social life. You will leave home before the sun comes up and return after the sun goes down. Your only friends will be your colleagues. It is not a place for work-life balance.

The training school is brutal. If you score less than 60 percent in any of their weekly exams during the training, you are expelled immediately. You must study like your life depends on it.
