I have five years of experience in corporate banking and I am considering moving to United Bank for Africa – Lagos. UBA prides itself on being Africa global bank, with a presence in over 20 African countries. I am highly interested in eventually working as an expatriate in Francophone Africa. How realistic are these cross-border deployment opportunities for mid-level managers at the Lagos headquarters? Additionally, does UBA pay competitively compared to tier-one rivals like Zenith and GTBank, or do they rely mostly on their pan-African prestige to attract talent?

UBA pan-African footprint is not just marketing; it is their core business strategy. The opportunities for regional deployment are highly realistic for mid-level managers. UBA frequently deploys experienced Nigerian staff to their subsidiaries in Francophone Africa (like Senegal, Cote Divoire) or East Africa to set up new departments, train local staff, or head operations. If you are bilingual (French and English), you are essentially a golden asset to UBA, and your promotion to a regional executive role will be incredibly fast. The bank culture is less aggressive than Zenith, focusing heavily on corporate diplomacy and steady expansion.

Regarding compensation, United Bank for Africa – Lagos historically paid slightly less than the ultra-aggressive tier-one banks like GTBank or Zenith. However, in recent years, UBA has drastically upgraded their salary scale to remain competitive in the talent war. Their pay is now very solid and comfortably within the tier-one bracket.
