How modern is the working environment and IT infrastructure at First Bank of Nigeria – Lagos?

First Bank is the oldest financial institution in the country, but they have been undergoing a massive digital transformation over the last decade. I am interviewing for an IT security position at First Bank of Nigeria – Lagos. Because of its age and massive legacy customer base, I am worried that the internal culture might still be very rigid, highly bureaucratic, and resistant to modern technological changes. Can an insider tell me if the IT department operates with modern agile frameworks? Also, is the job security as solid as people claim it to be in older generation banks?

The perception of First Bank of Nigeria – Lagos as an outdated, slow institution is a massive misconception today. While it is true that the bank has a 130-year legacy, their IT and digital infrastructure is incredibly modern. First Bank processes the highest volume of USSD and mobile banking transactions in Nigeria. As an IT security professional, you will be working in a highly sophisticated environment defending a massive digital ecosystem against thousands of daily cyber-attacks. They have invested billions in modern cybersecurity operation centers (SOC), cloud infrastructure, and agile development frameworks. You will not be working with ancient mainframes; you will be using top-tier global enterprise security tools. The IT department operates very much like a modern tech company within the larger bank.

Regarding the internal culture and job security at First Bank of Nigeria – Lagos: The bank is a fascinating mix of the old and the new. The administrative and HR processes can sometimes feel a bit slow and bureaucratic, heavily reflecting its traditional roots. However, the job security is absolute ironclad. First Bank rarely fires staff unless there is a case of blatant fraud or gross misconduct. It is one of the few banks left where people comfortably celebrate their 20th or 30th work anniversaries. The work-life balance for IT staff is excellent, the pension benefits are massive, and they offer arguably the lowest interest rates on staff housing loans in the industry. It is a fantastic place to build a long, stable, and highly specialized career in banking technology.

I am a cloud engineer at First Bank. We work in a fully agile environment. The management has given IT a massive budget to modernize everything. Do not let the "old bank" stigma fool you; the technology here is cutting-edge.

First Bank is the true definition of job security. During the pandemic when other banks were slashing salaries and laying off staff, First Bank did not touch a single kobo of our money. They treat staff with deep respect.

The promotion cycle is slightly rigid. You have to spend a mandatory number of years in a grade before you can be promoted, regardless of how brilliant you are. It is not like fintech where you can jump three levels in one year.
