What is the tech culture and salary structure like for software engineers working at Wema Bank – Lagos?
Wema Bank is known for ALAT, the first fully digital bank in Nigeria. As a backend developer, I want to know if the tech culture at Wema Bank – Lagos is truly like a modern fintech or if it still operates with rigid traditional banking bureaucracy. Do developers get competitive pay compared to pure fintech startups? Furthermore, what is their remote work policy like for the engineering team?

20 hours agoWema Bank is an interesting hybrid. Through ALAT, they have successfully built a fintech culture inside a traditional bank. The tech team operates mostly from their Purple Academy hub, insulated from the suits and ties of the main branches. You will use Agile methodologies, wear casual clothes, and work with modern tech stacks. However, the salary, while competitive for a mid-tier bank, does not quite match the massive venture-capital-funded salaries of pure fintechs like Paystack. You get job security and traditional bank benefits like upfront allowances and cheap loans, which pure fintechs lack.

20 hours agoThe work environment for developers at Wema is highly collaborative. The management genuinely listens to architectural suggestions. But you must remember it is still a highly regulated commercial bank. Deploying new features takes time because it must pass through rigorous cybersecurity and compliance checks. You cannot just push code to production on a Friday afternoon. The HMO is excellent, and they do offer hybrid work schedules depending on your team lead.

20 hours agoI work on the ALAT backend. The culture is very relaxed compared to Zenith or Access. We wear jeans to work and the managers are very approachable.

20 hours agoThe pay is decent, but if you are an expert developer, you might feel slightly underpaid compared to foreign remote jobs. However, the bonuses make up for it.
