Working for SPDC is the ultimate goal for most Nigerian engineers. I am preparing for a final interview for a pipeline engineering role at Shell Nigeria – Port Harcourt. How does the compensation package compare to the Lagos office? More importantly, what is life like in the Shell Residential Area in Port Harcourt? Is it safe for expatriates and families?

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Port Harcourt is the holy grail of engineering jobs in Nigeria. The compensation package is legendary. As a pipeline engineer, your salary will be massive, heavily fortified with hazard allowances, location allowances, and annual bonuses. The Shell Residential Area (RA) in Port Harcourt is a literal paradise. It is a massive, heavily fortified mini-city that is completely insulated from the rest of the state. Inside the RA, you have 24/7 power, treated water, world-class supermarkets, a golf course, massive swimming pools, and standard cinemas. It is incredibly safe for expatriates and families.

The engineering culture at Shell Nigeria is the best in the world. Safety is not just a policy; it is a religion. Goal Zero (no accidents, no leaks) dictates every single pipeline operation. You will be trained heavily and given access to the most advanced pipeline integrity technologies globally. Career progression is excellent, though highly competitive because everyone is brilliant. Shell also offers massive cross-posting opportunities; you could be sent to the Hague, Oman, or the USA for years. The only downside is that working in the Niger Delta field locations requires extreme security protocols. You will travel in bulletproof convoys or helicopters. But the financial reward and the prestige of the Shell badge make it the ultimate career prize.

I live in the Port Harcourt RA. My children attend the Shell school inside the camp, which is better than most private schools in Lagos. The quality of life here is unbelievable.

The safety culture will change your life. You will find yourself holding the handrail when walking down the stairs in your own house. They train you to be meticulously careful about everything.

Do not worry about security. Shell spends millions of dollars daily on military and private security to protect their staff. You are safer inside the Shell facilities than anywhere else in the country.
