Finding an apartment in Lagos using PropertyPro was surprisingly smooth despite fake agents

House hunting in Lagos is an extreme sport that usually ends in tears. I decided to try PropertyPro.ng to find a 2-bedroom flat in Surulere. The website interface is excellent. I love how you can filter by price, location, and property type. It saved me from driving around aimlessly under the sun. I found a beautiful apartment within two days. However, the platform is still plagued by dubious real estate agents. Out of the five agents I contacted, two demanded a viewing fee before even showing me the property, which is a massive red flag. PropertyPro needs to implement a stricter verification system for agents who post listings to weed out scammers. Despite the bad apples, the platform itself is a very powerful and necessary tool for Nigerian renters.

PropertyPro is great for finding luxury apartments in Island areas like Lekki and Ikoyi. But if you are looking for budget apartments in the Mainland, the site is filled with fake pictures downloaded from the internet to bait you.

Never pay a viewing fee! Any agent that tells you to pay 5,000 Naira just to open the gate and show you the house is a scammer. A genuine agent makes their money from the 10 percent agency fee after you rent the house.

I prefer PropertyPro to Jiji for real estate. PropertyPro feels slightly more professional, and you can easily view the profile and office address of the real estate company listing the property.

Be very careful. An agent showed me a beautiful apartment on PropertyPro. When I went for inspection, I found out the house was already occupied, and the agent was just trying to collect "form fees" from desperate house hunters.

The biggest issue is that agents never take down their listings. You will see a beautiful house, call the agent, and they will say "Ah, that one has been paid for since last month, but I have another one that is not as nice." It is a classic bait-and-switch tactic.
